Women's History Month No. 8

"I'm not against the corporations. They are our wealth. But they are getting too greedy. I don't want to do away with corporations. I want them to make our cars, however, not our laws."

"We must declare our independence from the corrupting bonds of big money in our election campaigns by reforming or campaign finance system. We must alter our government. As a people, we know how to declare our independence and authorize alterations of our government."

Doris Haddock, a.k.a. Granny D
(1910 ~ 2010)

[Let me say that the picture of Granny D on the road is from www.rickhubbard.com. Mr. Hubbard is running for the U.S. Senate from Vermont, the land of the Green Mountains.]

So, especially in this, another election year, you all have to know about this heroic, earnest citizen, an elderly retired secretary from New Hampshire, who literally walked across our continent, from the Pacific coast to the steps of the U.S. Capitol, stopping to speak to growing groups of people. Doris Haddock, who used the 'road name,' Granny D, made her historic trek years before the Occupy Wall Street movement, in the year she turned 90 years old can you believe it? and wrote a BOOK about her experience - some of the best civic writing I've ever read; this link will take you to some of her words – and why? To promote the idea of campaign finance reform. To encourage people to, as the saying goes, take our country back from the corporate moneybags. God bless GrannyD and, oh yeah, the United States of America. After all, the idea (however beleaguered and diminished by the widening chasm between the haves and have-nots) of a nation based upon the ideals of liberty and people governing themselves is still the hope of the world.
